The burgundian city of Bergen op Zoom
Bergen op Zoom
If you are talking about Bergen op Zoom, you are talking about Burgundian Brabant in its purest form. Narrow streets, old squares and quirky monuments tell the rich past of the city. The historic centre is a bustling shopping city, where shopping is great. In addition, Bergen op Zoom is located in a beautiful wooded area (part of landscape De Brabantse Wal), where you can cycle and/or walk for hours.
Monuments
Lovers of historic buildings can indulge themselves in the city centre of Bergen op Zoom. Here the rich past of the city is still clearly present in the countless beautifully restored buildings. The most striking monument is Het Markiezenhof, the former residential palace of the Lords and Marquis of Bergen op Zoom. Nowadays it is used as a museum, where you can get a picture of the chic way of life of the former inhabitants while walking through the many rooms, halls, galleries, stair towers, courtyards and gardens.
In addition, the city centre has more than 800 monuments, of which more than 200 are listed on the National Monuments List. From May to October, the monuments are open for viewing. The Town Hall, the former Synagogue, the Sint Gertrudiskerk and the Prison Gate can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday from 13:00 to 16:30.
The monumental buildings, together with the many nice shops, cozy cafes and restaurants, create a unique atmosphere in the center of Bergen op Zoom. The city is therefore well worth a visit. If you really want to get to know Bergen op Zoom well, then a city walk through the center is highly recommended. At VVV Brabantse Wal you can buy a walking guide, which will guide you past all monuments and other attractions in and around the center. If you want to discover the city with a larger group, it is possible to take a walk under the guidance of a guide from Stichting Bezichtiging Monumenten. In the months of June to September, a city walk is held every Wednesday and Sunday afternoon, to which you can join. This walk starts from the Old Town Hall on the Grote Markt at 14.00 hours.
