Natural area

The Brabantse Wal

The Brabantse Wal is a striking landscape in West Brabant, on the border with Zeeland and Flanders (Belgium). The Brabantse Wal is located in the municipalities of Woensdrecht, Bergen op Zoom, Steenbergen and part of Roosendaal.

Most notable is the steep-sided edge: an abrupt transition from the higher sandy soils to the lower sea clay polders. This steep edge winds from Ossendrecht along Hoogerheide, Woensdrecht, Bergen op Zoom and Halsteren to Steenbergen. The escarpment is a maximum of 20 meters + NAP. The Brabantse Wal is geologically valuable and has been part of the UNESCO Globla Geopark Schelde Delta since 2024. In addition, the Brabantse Wal is largely protected nature reserve (Natura 2000).

Nature Park

Grenspark De Zoom - Kalmthoutse Heide

Grenspark De Zoom – Kalmthoutse Heide is not just any forest, it is a very varied nature reserve with numerous fens, heathlands, land dunes and vast forests. It contains rare natural values and is of important scenic and cultural-historical significance for both the Netherlands and Belgium.

The nearly 4,000 acres of natural areas are a valuable natural asset, and are therefore well protected and managed. Since Grenspark De Zoom – Kalmthoutse Heide is visited by tens of thousands of visitors every year, a good balance between nature conservation and recreation is of great importance. The central part of the nature reserve is mainly resting area for plants and animals, on the edges there is plenty of room for visitors to explore the area. If you follow the marked hiking trails, you will pass by the most characteristic spots and beautiful views. There is also a 32-kilometer bicycle route around the Border Park, which shows you the diverse landscapes in and around the nature reserve.

Natural area

Halsters Laag

Not far from bungalow park Familyland, between Bergen op Zoom and Steenbergen, lies the Halsters Laag: a beautiful nature reserve which, thanks to intervention by the Forestry Commission, has changed back into what it was: a beautiful peat bog. A 4-kilometer boot trail has been established in the Halsters Low: the French Trail. If you follow the posts with blue booties, you will come across wet meadows, ghostly groves and pools full of toads and salamanders. Highly recommended for those who love extraordinary nature. And dogs are welcome to walk with us (on a leash) here as well!

It is also possible to cycle through the nature reserve: the old church path from Moerstraten to Lepelstraat has been extended and opened again.

Nature Park

National Park the Biesbosch

The Biesbosch National Park is a rather exceptional natural area. In addition to its unique landscape, it has gained great fame for the beavers, which have reappeared in the Biesbosch since 1988. They are native to the Elbe area in Germany and were released into the Biesbosch by the Forestry Commission. According to the latest count, about 200 beavers live in National Park de Biesbosch.

The Biesbosch may call itself a National Park because it is among the largest valuable natural areas in our country. It is a true paradise for any nature lover.

Several companies organize boat tours of the Biesbosch, some even offering a full-day program. For more information, for example, please visit www.zilvermeeuw.nl or www.fluisterboot.com
